How a Vedic Kundli Reading Works

You do not need to know the names of planets or charts before a reading. Start with the question you want to discuss and how certain you are about your birth details. Those two things are more useful than a long list of predictions copied from different apps.

What the chart actually contains

A kundli is calculated from a date, local time, and place. The D1, or birth chart, records planetary positions and their relationship to the ascendant, the sign rising at the birth location. Jyotish assigns meanings to these positions. Calculating a position and interpreting what it means for a person's life are different activities; a precise calculation does not make a prediction certain.

Three layers you will hear about

  • The birth chart: the starting point for discussing the question.
  • Divisional charts: additional charts derived from the same planetary positions, used within the tradition to examine a particular topic. D9 is often discussed in marriage readings and D10 in career readings.
  • Dasha and transit: traditional timing systems. A dasha is a calculated planetary period; a transit is a planet's position at a later date.

Ask the reader to explain how these layers relate. A list of technical terms is not an explanation, and disagreement between layers should be acknowledged.

An example of a useful discussion

Illustrative example, not a client case: someone asks whether to leave a job. A useful discussion starts with their options, notice period, savings, and reasons for leaving. If a reader describes a period as favourable for change, the next question is what that interpretation depends on. It does not establish that a new offer will arrive or that resigning now is sensible.

When the birth time is uncertain

Say whether the time comes from a record, a family memory, or an estimate. Do not turn an approximate time into an exact one just because an input requires minutes. Ask which parts of the reading change across your possible time range. If two apps disagree, first compare timezone, location, and calculation settings.

What to take away

Keep three short notes: the interpretation, its assumptions, and any practical decision still yours to make. You should be able to ask for clarification without being pressured to buy a remedy. Astrology here is a traditional interpretive practice, not a proven way to predict an individual's future.
